Dana's favourite quotes for creative friends
A couple of quotes - one from Martha Graham and one from Marianne Williamson - that I
like to share with all my creative friends and family members. I share these poems to promote the thought that we must never forget our own beauty and magic, nor that of those around us. We collectively make the magic happen, and it's definitely happening among my friends and family members via theatre, music, programming, engineering, writing and art, every day. I also have a personal crusade that I try to carry on with my fellow creative folks. You know how there's that stereotype of the prima donna/diva type that says stuff like, "You people have no idea who I am!". ::chuckle:: Well, just think of me as the "anti-diva". I like to say things like, "You people need to accept who you are: marvelous, talented, wonderful, magical. Accept this truth now, and your lives will be much easier later." (I know it's hard! I'm right there with ya!)
Seriously, I figure there are enough folks out there feeding creative people crap, and this fact leaves me all the freedom in the world to feed my friends the good stuff. I learned a long time ago that ego is inversely proportional to self-esteem, and that most actors (at least) have very little of the latter, so I figure it can't hurt to spread a little truth around and help out the balance of good in the universe. (Bear with me, I'm almost done, here...) I hope you enjoy the poems. If they're too much for you, please forgive the sappiness. I grew up listening to far too much of The Carpenters and Stevie Wonder, and am actually a Queen of Sappiness Masquerading as a Rational Being... ::sigh:: But you knew that...
May you have as much peace, light, art, magic, music, love, hugs, health and happiness as
you can comfortably tolerate in your life. ::chuckle::

There is vitality, a life force,
an energy, a quickening
that is translated through you into action, and because
there is only one of you in all time, this expression is
unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through
any other medium and will be lost. The world will not have
it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is,
nor how valuable it is, nor how it compares with other
expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours clearly
and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even
have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep
open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channels open... No artist is pleased... There is
no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a
queer, divine dissatisfaction; A blessed unrest that keeps
us marching and makes us more alive than the others.
* Martha Graham to Agnes DeMille *
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest
fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our
light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves: "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and
fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child
of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There
is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people
won't feel insecure around you. You were born to make
manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just
in some of us: it is in everyone. And as we let our own
light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to
do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our
presence automatically liberates others.
